#12 year old girl emerges winner of Spelling Bee Competition

An educational program designed to improve and enhance Pupils’ knowledge and use of the English Language, has been held in the Hohoe Municipality.

The program which consist of a spelling bee competition and tests in Idiomatic Expressions, saw a twelve year old girl, Lois Addo emerge as winner at the 3rd edition of the program.

The competition saw 40 participants drawn from 20 schools from both the public and private sector, with 13 schools from Hohoe East and Hohoe West and continued with 7 schools from Hohoe Central and Hohoe North on Tuesday 24th May, 2016.

At the first group stage, 12 year old Dogbe Rebecca from Global Academic School took the First position followed by Addo Lois 12, from Universal Preparatory School and Agbo Agbemor Derrick, 12 taking the third position from St. Joseph Preparatory School.

Also, Mawusi Hilda, 13 from Hohoe Newtown Junior High school took the first position, followed by Segbefia Princess 12 from Matter Ecclesiastes J. H. S and Kwasitse Andy, 14  from  M.A Experimental Junior High School all within the 2nd group.

From the 6 finalist who took part in the last part of the competition, Addo Lois from Universal Preparatory school J. H. S walked away with a brand new laptop computer donated by Dr. Robert  Doe from Cedar Medical Center at Hohoe, with novels and other consolation prices as the Overall winner of this year’s Hohoe Inter-schools Spelling Bee and Idiomatic Expressions Competition.

The Second winner Rebbeca Dogbe from Global Academy J. H. S, took a wall Clock, 5 plastic chairs and other consolation prizes.

Whiles the third winner, Hilda Mawusi from Newtown J. H.S also took 3 plastic chairs and reading novels.

The Executive Director of Shalom Word Foundation, Ms Shalom Abla Lumor in a congratulatory message urged other children in the municipality to take keen interest in the program and work hard in preparation for next year’s competition.

She added that incorporating Idiomatic Expressions into this year’s competition has made the program unique, as it will ensure that participants have broader knowledge on various aspects of the English language.

Taking her turn, Assistant Headmaster of Likpe Nkwata Basic School, who is also the CEO of Feminine Star Africa, Ms. Rita Siaw, urged the pupils to be circumspect in their studies by paying attention to details of the English Language.

She also urged other school authorities who are not yet part of the program to take much interest in the competition and trained their pupils for next year’s competition.

Hohoe Inter-school Spelling Bee and Idiomatic Expressions Competition is an annual program, organized under the auspices of Shalom word Foundation.

The program has been running for the past 3 years.  

This year’s event was supported by, Dr. Mrs Bernice Adiku Heloo, Member of Parliament for the Area, Social Security and National Insurance Trust and Hohoe based corporate organizations including Green Shield Agro-Chemicals, Cedar Medical Health Center, Latest Foam, Wofa Kuma Enterprise, Shine Infinite, Feminine Star Africa,  Nox Restaurant, Top Ice Drinking Water, Home Builders  Enterprise and Atsu Rubber store and endorsed by Ghana Education Service Hohoe.
